Spinal Fusion and Stabilization

When structural stability is required, fusion provides a durable solution designed to relieve pain, restore alignment, and provide lasting support.

Spinal fusion is a procedure that stabilizes the spine by joining two or more vertebrae. When a segment of the spine becomes unstable or structurally compromised, limiting motion at that level can relieve pressure on the nerves and restore proper alignment.

Fusion is the appropriate choice when the underlying problem requires stability rather than motion preservation. The goal is not only to relieve symptoms, but to correct the structural issue and provide a durable, long-term solution.

When is Spinal Fusion
the Right Approach?

Spinal fusion is recommended when the spine demands stability or structural correction, not simply symptom relief. In these situations, preserving motion is no longer the top priority. Instead, the goal is to create a stable, properly aligned segment that protects the spinal cord and nerves.

Fusion is often the most
appropriate option when:

  • Spinal instability is present, such as in spondylolisthesis

  • Degenerative changes caused a loss of structural support

  • Spinal deformity (scoliosis or kyphosis) affects alignment and balance

  • A fracture compromises the stability of the vertebra

  • Prior surgery has not provided lasting stability

  • The condition cannot be safely or effectively treated with motion-preserving techniques

Fusion eliminates motion at the treated level to restore stability and protect the spine. When carefully selected, it provides a durable solution that addresses the underlying structural problem.

Fusion and Stabilization
Procedures

Dr. Beckett performs the full spectrum of spinal fusion and stabilization procedures, selecting the approach best suited to each patient’s diagnosis, anatomy, and surgical goals.

Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion (ACDF)

Removes a damaged disc from the front of the neck to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. The space is then stabilized to restore alignment and support the cervical spine.

Posterior Cervical Fusion

Similar to ACDF except that Dr. Beckett accesses the spine through the back of the neck to remove the problematic disc, stabilize the affected segments, and restore alignment.

Lumbar Fusion (ALIF, TLIF, PLIF)

Dr. Beckett stabilizes the lower spine using anterior, transforaminal, or posterior approaches. He selects the technique based on the location of the problem, degree of instability, and patient anatomy.

Corpectomy

When the vertebral body itself is the source of spinal cord compression, Dr. Beckett removes the affected vertebra and adjacent discs, then reconstructs and stabilizes the segment.

IS MINIMALLY INVASIVE ALWAYS BETTER?

Dr. Beckett's Approach To Fusion

Spinal fusion requires more than stabilization. It demands precise planning to restore alignment and ensure long-term structural balance. Decisions about levels, approach, and fixation are tailored to the patient’s anatomy and the underlying condition.

Dr. Beckett approaches fusion with the same discipline applied to motion preservation: He selects the least extensive intervention that fully addresses the problem while supporting a durable, long-term result.
